Gingham word is derived from the Malayan word “genggang” which means striped. Being known today as a contrasting check shirt/dress material, it was not known this way originally. The fabric was distinguished as “dyed in the yarn” fabric, which meant that it was dyed first and then woven. Gingham fabric is best described as a pattern of woven coloured squares (bright and contrasting, yet appealing in appearance) on a white background.
